1111

That's the number of emails I've gotten to me since I started my job here on the west coast. No, let me clarify: I have a rule in Outlook that directs e-mails sent only directly to me to a folder named "To me." The truth is, if I count emails not sent to me directly (i.e. on a distribution list or on a cc), the number jumps to over 9000. The blame in that case rests solely on the verbose folks in the London office. So, 1111 emails - which turned to 1119 by the time I got around to writing this post - turns out to be about 80 a week, which isn't too bad, considering some other people I know. Then again, figuring that the first two months here I was actually just "training" and not getting real emails from clients, the number jumps considerably. I've heard horror stories of people who get over 100 emails in a single day, and to those I must inquire: how do you get any work done at all? Just reading and replying would take me 8 hours a day.

So, how many e-mails do you get a week?

Darth side of the force

Oh my, even Lord Vader's got his own blog now.

I left him a comment:

Dear Lord Vader,

if you plan to visit Hoth, I strongly suggest long underwear, and upgrading the heating coils in your cybernetic prosthetics. I grew up in Canada, and let me tell you, it's no fun being forced to hole up in a disemboweled Tauntaun due to the cold.

Dear Tao,

Thanks for the tip. As a point of fact, our new heavy weather outerwear is the bomb, and I feel quite snug.

Sincerely,

D. Vader

I met this guy at the Schweser seminar this weekend, and checking out his website, I realized that I had to get some links going...

Must research blogrolling.

Too Cool.

There's this place down the street from me called Black Market, it's a trendy Westside retail clothing shop full of Japanese-influenced fashion, and a bunch of hard-to-find brands. Every now and then they do an art show, where they showcase a local artist. I've been to one, and it's very very cool; a live DJ is spinning, refreshments are served (i.e. Red Bull & Vodka), and art is shown.

One of the hot new artists that is shown 'round here is Audrey Kawasaki - just absolutely awesome. I may make her show this Friday if I'm not too bummed out after my first day of Schweser Intensive Review.

I think I may buy some art, if I can afford it.

Human Food

I'm not a big fan of the meal they call breakfast. Mind you, I agree that it is the most important meal of the day, and when I do get my first meal in early, I find myself with a lot more energy than otherwise. Over the last few years, I've been experimenting with different formulae for brekkie, ranging from instant oatmeal, to a muffin, to Mr. Christie's cookies. I think I've settled on a real alternative to eating healthy.

Enter the energy bar. I'm still in the process of finding one without the yucky protein & vitamin aftertaste, but it's a good way to stuff in 200 calories to get me through the morning. And a lot more healthy than Double Chocolate Chunk cookies.

When shopping for said energy bars, I've noticed that the process is amazingly similar to buying food for my dog. You flip the back, check out the nutrition info panel, and then read through the ingredients list for things that don't belong in anything edible. If people were pets, you'd find Balance Bars in the human food aisle of the supermarket.

Erm... found.

Please ignore my previous rant.

The phone was wedged between the cushions of the couch. And who could have committed such a diabolical crime? The only culprit...

The Cat.

Look at 'em beady lil eyes.

Nasssty thieving hobbitses.

Lost and found

After a full three months in my possession, I think I've lost my cell phone. I feel almost naked without it. To tell you the truth, I'm not really sure where I lost it, not so much as a clue. All I know is that culminating in today, for the last three days I've had an odd feeling that something was missing. My experience is a bit like "phantom limb" sensation that amputees sometimes experience, where they experience sensations from an appendage that is no longer there, except that in my case the missing appendage was my Motorola V220, clipped to my hip.

Retail price is so high for new phones too. They're so heavily subsidized by the wireless companies that it costs almost five times more to buy without the contract - damn the wireless companies and damn the time value of money!

I've calculated, it's going to take at least twenty brown bag lunches to make up for the phone. Doh.

Britney got knocked up

As much as I disdain celebrity-worship and the constant coverage in the media, I do have a soft spot in my heart for juicy news on certain celebs. I'm sure you've all heard, but Britney Spears confirmed that she and Mr. Britney Spears (i.e. Kevin Federline) are expecting a child.

Kevin Federline is such a dawg. I wish I could be a bum and have babies with rich celebrity mommas would would have to pay ME alimony when I get divorced.

V is for Victory

For those who remember, I got a number of tickets all in one incident last fall - I got cited for an improper lane change, and I happened to leave my license, registration and insurance documents at home. Well, I had gone to X-Copper, who - for a rather hefty fee - set my court dates, did all the documentation and went to court for me. Months passed before the courts could catch up to my case. The date had come and gone, and I'm pleased to announce that I got notice that all charges against me had been dropped.

Excellent... a sterling driving record once again that I can boast about!

Fun with Elevators

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- A Chinese food delivery man was found trapped in a broken elevator Tuesday, more than three days after he was reported missing, police said.
Ming Kung Chen, 35, who worked for the Happy Dragon restaurant in the Bronx, was reported missing late Friday when he did not return an hour after setting out on a delivery.

Police said he was found about 6 a.m. on Tuesday and was hospitalized with dehydration.

Police were unable to question him immediately because he did not speak English.

Newspapers had reported the Chinese community feared that Chen, who is from Fuzhou province in China, might have been a victim of robbery or foul play by immigrant smugglers.

The question I have is - were the restaurant workers incredibly stupid or were the NYPD totally inept? How hard could it have possibly been to look up his last delivery address and check the elevator? I should change careers and become a detective.

P.S. I'm guessing he was probably hospitalized with dehydration because he got hungry and ate his own MSG-laden food.

Poker night

I played poker with the guys from work a few times in the last month, and I'm off again tomorrow. It's small stakes gaming, but it does give a nice break in the middle of the work week. I must say, my posting has been going down recently due to the studying I've been doing. The combination of nothing interesting happening to me during the week (work, eat, sleep, study) and being busy during the workday sure saps my creative energy. Hopefully I'll get motivated again in the near future.

I've already got a list going of things I want to do following exam day on June 4. It's in a little notebook on my nightstand. So far, this includes:
  1. Work on my golf swing - and get my score under 100
  2. Visit San Francisco and look at the sea lions
  3. Visit San Diego and see the aquarium / zoo
  4. Experience the Mojave Desert in the summer
  5. Do some rock climbing
  6. Learn how to play the guitar
  7. Get my motorcycle license
  8. Learn to sail
  9. Read all the books I've been meaning to read
I'm sure I'm missing a whole bunch here - it's a work in progress.
